How Much Do Private Jiu-Jitsu Lessons Cost?

Private jiu jitsu lessons usually run somewhere between $60 and $150 an hour depending on where you are and who’s teaching. That’s a wide range, so here’s the honest breakdown of what drives the price and how to know if you’re actually getting your money’s worth.

What you’re actually paying for

A group class splits one coach across twenty people. A private is one coach, one hundred percent on you, for the whole hour. Every rep gets corrected, the session is built around your goals, and you don’t spend forty minutes waiting your turn. You’re not paying for mat time, you’re paying for undivided attention and a faster path.

What moves the price

Belt level and experience of the coach, whether they travel to you, gi or no-gi, and your area all move the number. A well-known black belt in a big city charges more than a solid purple belt coaching locally. Neither is automatically the right call, for a beginner or intermediate, attention matters more than the color of the belt.

What I charge

Straight numbers, no games. Your first session is $60 so you can find out if we work well together before spending real money. After that a single session is $95, or a five-session block is $425, which comes out to $85 each. No membership, no contract, no sign-up fee. Training with a partner drops the per-person cost even further.

How to tell if it’s worth it

One good private should give you at least one thing you can use in your very next round. If you leave a session with nothing you can actually apply, it was overpriced at any number. That’s why my first session is cheap and why you don’t pay if it wasn’t worth your time, the risk should be on the coach, not on you.

When privates are worth it, and when they’re not

Privates are worth it when you’re brand new and want a real foundation, when you’re stuck on the same problem, or when you’re prepping for something specific. They’re not a replacement for mat time and rounds, think of them as the fastest way to fix what your regular training keeps missing.
