Private Lessons or Group Class: Which Actually Makes You Better?

People ask me this like they have to pick a side. You don’t. Group class and private coaching do different jobs, and the fastest people I know use both on purpose. Here’s the honest version, even though I’m the guy selling privates.

What group class is great at

Volume, energy, and bodies. You get lots of live rounds against people of every size and style, you build your gas tank, and you become part of a room. It’s also the cheapest way to train and the best way to fall in love with the sport. If all you did was show up to group three times a week, you would still get good eventually.

Where it quietly holds you back

In a class of thirty, nobody is watching just you. The instructor teaches the move of the day to the whole room, and you drill whatever is on the menu, not the thing you personally keep getting caught in. So your specific leak, the one bad habit that’s costing you every round, just gets reinforced over and over because no one is there to catch it.

What a private actually changes

One hour, on your problem. I watch you move, I find the thing that’s actually breaking down, and we fix that instead of adding more moves on top of a broken base. Most people don’t need more technique. They need someone to correct the ten reps they’re already doing wrong. That’s what shrinks months of frustration into a couple of sessions.

So which one

If you’re brand new, nervous, plateaued, or getting ready for a competition, privates move you faster than anything else. But I’m not telling you to quit your gym. Keep training group for the rounds and the community, and use a private when you want to actually fix something. Do both, and you’ll pass people who only do one.
