Nervous About Your First Jiu Jitsu Session? Here's What Happens

Almost everyone is a little nervous before their first session. They picture getting thrown around by some killer while they flop like a fish. That is not how a first private goes. Here’s the honest walk-through so you know exactly what you’re walking into.

You will not get smashed

Session one is not hard sparring. It’s movement, posture, and two or three things that will keep you safe and calm on the mat. My job in the first hour is to make jiu jitsu make sense, not to prove I can beat you up. If anyone runs a beginner’s first day like a shark tank, find a different coach.

You don’t need to be in shape or flexible

People wait months to start because they want to get in shape first. That’s backwards. We start exactly where you are. Out of shape, stiff, never done a sport in your life, all fine. The mat is where you get in shape, not the thing you have to be ready for.

What to bring

Comfortable clothes you can move in, water, and a towel. If you have a rash guard, wear it. If you want to train in the gi, I can sort you out with one to borrow. Trim your nails, that’s the one real rule, for everybody’s sake.

The first hour

We talk for a minute about what you want out of this, then we move. I’ll find the biggest thing holding you back and we’ll work on that one thing until it feels different. You’ll leave knowing more than most people learn in their first month of dropping into a packed class.

That’s it. No pressure, no ego, no lineup. Just the mat and an hour that’s actually about you.
